EXPERIENCE
When campers join us for Sugar Roots’ Farm Summer Camp, they can expect an immersive five days in nature, full of arts and crafts, scientific inquiry, outdoor exploration, and new friendships with their peers and our farm animals. Our camp curriculum covers the importance of seed saving and pollination, different ecosystems, the earth’s natural cycles, human impact on the planet, and finally, the abundant magic of the natural world.
Our Sprout curriculum is geared towards children ages five to seven and approaches these topics through a playful and imaginative lens. Campers will make flower crowns, draw in their nature journals, build fairy houses, tie-dye with plants, make dragon eggs and learn about the diverse types of animals, bugs, and plants we are grateful to have here at the farm.
The Naturalists camp curriculum covers these same topics but catered towards children ages eight to twelve. Campers will get their hands dirty planting seeds, collecting chicken eggs, grooming horses, building terrariums, searching for earthworms, and documenting their scientific investigations.
Sugar Roots Farm
Our mission is to build food sovereignty and community resilience in the gulf south with sustainable farming as the foundation. We aim to teach and practice intentional land stewardship to ensure that future generations have the skills and resources to grow and eat nourishing fresh foods.
Our goal is to teach children K-12 ecological stewardship, the basics of where their food comes from, and how to make healthy eating decisions using a place-based, experiential, hands-on curriculum.
Our most utilized program: Field trips
FIELD TRIP EXPERIENCE
When students sign up for a field trip with us, they will receive a guided tour of Sugar Roots Farm's animals, vegetable & herb gardens, and composting site with one of our Farm Educators.
The curriculum for each tour will be based upon K-12 state science standards. We love to make intentional connections between what students learn in school and what we focus on in the outdoor classroom.
Weekly schedule for reservations: Monday through Wednesday and Fridays.
Time: 10 am - 12 pm
Cost per person: $8 (this includes educators and chaperones).
The total number of visitors per field trip: is capped at 60, including students, educators, and chaperones.
