City Year New Orleans

At City Year, we believe that all students can succeed and that developing the skills and mindsets of children and young adults contributes to strong, vibrant communities—outcomes that benefit all of us.

We unite young adult AmeriCorps members for a year of full-time service and development in New Orleans public schools, where teams of 8-12 AmeriCorps members are trained to serve for 10+ hours a day. For an entire school year, AmeriCorps members provide whole school supports and individualized academic interventions for students who are behind in math and/or literacy, and/or are struggling with attendance or social-emotional learning.

In addition to our work in schools, we are committed to developing our Corps members into future leaders across a verity of career sectors. While each Corps member completes 750 hours of hands-on service working on highly collaborative teams in the schoolhouse, they also receive another 340 hours of professional development and career training by City Year staff and external partners, and are observed and coached for over 30 hours throughout the year. Because of our methodical approach to Corps member workforce and civic engagement, 96% of our Corps alumni agree that their City Year experience had a significantly positive experience on their professional lives, with 82% saying that City Year has increased the ways in which they remain civically engaged after their term of service.
