Description

In this lesson, students explore the fascinating world of nuclear energy—learning how reactors work, what fission is, and how radiation plays a role in our everyday lives. After testing their knowledge with a fun Kahoot game (with prizes!), students get hands-on experience by measuring real radioactive materials with a Geiger counter. The activity wraps up with a sweet twist: using candy to solve the Ionizing Radiation Riddle!

Be Energy Smart with the Louisiana Office of Energy

The Louisiana Office of Energy’s Be Energy Smart program is thrilled to bring FREE Virtual and In-Classroom Visits to K–12 students across the state! Our lessons are hands-on, exciting, and designed to spark curiosity about energy and conservation.

Cooking with Solar – Students design and build their own solar ovens, then put them to the test by making s’mores or nachos!

All About Oil – Students become engineers as they build and test their very own model oil rigs.

Renewables vs. Non-Renewables – A NEED Project favorite! Students play the Candy Collector game to explore how we use different energy resources.

Squishy Circuits & Sidekick Circuits – Students dive into the world of electricity with fun, hands-on circuit building activities.

Looking for something more advanced? Take on the Energy House Challenge! In this two-part lesson, high school students engineer, insulate, and test a model home (built from a cardboard box) to see whose design is the most energy efficient. The sky’s the limit—who will build the winning house?

✅ All materials are provided whenever possible, so you can focus on the fun of learning.
