Description

At BSCS Science Learning, we believe that access to high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) and professional learning (PL) are important for supporting students’ science learning.

In partnership with Southern University, BSCS has been awarded a $4M research grant from the US Department of Education to conduct a research study to understand how teachers’ use of HQIM, like OpenSciEd, can lead to better student learning outcomes. To do so, we need your help.

We are looking for 8th grade science teachers who are either:

1.Currently using OpenSciEd AND are committed to using it through the end of the 2026-27 school year, OR

2.Committed to using other curriculum (including teacher-designed curricula) AND will not be teaching OpenSciEd through the end of the 2026-27 school year.

Both groups of teachers are needed for our study. As with any experiment, we will collect baseline student and teacher data during the 2025-26 school year and conduct the research study during the 2026-27 school year. All teachers will receive at least $2,000 compensation for participating in the study. Since PL is important for HQIM implementation, OpenSciEd teachers will receive summer and academic year support. Non-OpenSciEd teachers will be eligible for PL after the study’s conclusion.

BSCS Science Learning
At BSCS Science Learning, we are working toward a world where everyone is inspired and prepared to use science to build a better future. In this world, each individual will have an understanding of science they can use to improve their lives, contribute to their communities, and succeed in their careers. To get there, all young people need access to a high quality science education. That’s where we come in. BSCS is on a mission to transform K-12 science teaching and learning nationwide. Since our founding in 1958, BSCS has been committed to the idea that science is not just something you know but something you do. Both scientific knowledge and scientific know-how are critically important to life in the modern age. Over the years our views on what it means to understand and do science have changed, as have our views about why it is important. Today, we have a deeper appreciation of the importance of science education for our personal and civic lives. We are working to prepare young people for decisions in the doctor’s office, the feed store, and the voting booth, along with building the foundation they will need if they choose to continue on to STEM careers.
