Description

Join KidWind for a 6-hour, topic-specific renewable energy workshop. Whether in-person or virtual, these dynamic workshops include the distribution of materials and grow content knowledge while also exploring teacher-approved, hands-on K-12 lessons. Our fully virtual workshops are hands-on and focus on delivering just enough content knowledge to get going, as well as a wide variety of practical activities for your classroom. With generous support from our partners at CREATE we are able to offer scholarships to 6-12th grade educators. Use the code CREATE2023 to get $140 off your registration. Before Workshop - Wind 101 Webinar - (1 Hour) This Informative presentation introduces wind energy foundational concepts and explores the basic science and technology behind modern wind power In - Person - Using Classroom Windmills & Turbines (2 Hours) Understand the basics of modern wind turbine design by trying your hand at the MacGyver Wind Power Challenge! Build a basic windmill to demonstrate how a windmill captures the energy of the wind and transforms it into usable mechanical energy. Construct a simple classroom wind turbine and use a variety of materials to design blades that optimize the power output of a model wind turbine. Participants will isolate one variable of wind turbine blade design, then collect and share data for that variable. We will also spend time learning how to measure electrical output and how to design optimal blades for model turbines. After Workshop - Collecting Data & Sharing (1-2 Hours) You will be asked to collect some data about your wind energy projects and post them to our Online Challenge spaces. You will also learn how to set up your own KidWind account to set up Challenge Spaces for your students. Some things to know: This workshop and the materials used are geared towards middle school and high school teachers. No prior knowledge of wind energy is required. You will need a stable internet connection and dedicated space in which to work. We will ship you a box of material 4-7 days before the workshop. Preservice and retired teachers are welcome!
Urban League of Louisiana

Greetings Louisiana Educators! My name is Fred Brooks, Jr. and I am a Louisiana native and graduate of Zachary High School’s Class of 1999. I am currently Vice President of Business Development for the Gulf Coast Organization, Sales Operations Manager for Self Publish-N-30 Days, and a Business Development Representative with Kurz Wind Division. One of my passions has always been to create opportunities for our youth and give back to our communities. I have partnered with Gulf Coast Organization, Kurz Wind Division, KidWind, Urban League of Louisiana, Self Publish-N-30 Days, Scotlandville Magnet High School in Baton Rouge, and L.B. Landry High School in New Orleans to bring the KidWind Challenge to my home state of Louisiana for the very first time! Students will be able to work with teachers to build small-scale wind turbines, compete in regional and national events, gain exposure to renewable energy careers, and network with industry professionals as a result of this collaboration. Gulf Coast Organization, KidWind and Urban League of Louisiana are all non-profits, with KidWind also being a STEM program. The KidWind Challenge is geared towards students in grades 4-12 and offers scholarship opportunities for high school seniors. Most importantly, the workshops and trainings for educators to prepare students for this hands-on, real-world experience mentioned in the attached correspondence is 100% free to educators and students! We welcome and encourage all educators to participate and sign up for either the Baton Rouge workshop or New Orleans workshop based on convenience and location by using the registration links below. We look forward to seeing you!
