Description

Learn about the Mississippi River, our Coast and how to teach outside the classroom. We cater all of the lunches for this extraordinary professional development. Join us Monday-Wednesday, July 10th-13th, 2023 for the Mississippi River Delta Institute (MRDI)—a free professional development program designed to inspire, educate and prepare 3rd-8th grade teachers to engage students in STEM disciplines through experiential, inquiry-based investigations. It will incorporate expert presentations about the Mississippi River Delta environments, rich media resources ready for use with students, and community-building with other educators. This workshop is a component of a national initiative to develop a community of water educators. The Rivers Institutes are highly acclaimed professional development workshops developed by CGEE in St. Paul, Minnesota. For more information on the Rivers Institutes and CGEE, please visit the Graduate Programs and Professional Development page. Activities Include: Exploring the Mississippi River and Estuaries by boat, offering unique vantage points of the water; Articulating field investigations through accurate, scientific observation; Creating, utilizing and learning new strategies using science notebooks; Participating in learning activities utilizing multimedia learning tools as well as other classroom resources; Inquiry-based investigations of riverine and marsh habitats, delta geology, coastal engineering, and urban water management; Creating plans to implement science, inquiry, and literacy investigations into the classroom; Strategy sharing for helping students 'think like a scientist,' 'design like an engineer,' and 'write like an author.'

When Arlene Meraux founded the Meraux Foundation, she asked her niece, Rita, to manage it with a simple guiding principle: to ensure that the land resources that Arlene transferred to the Foundation would be used to improve the quality of life in St. Bernard. We focus on Education, Environment, Community, Land Strategies and special projects.
